SEASON 2: 2014-2015
Felt Book is a collection of home remedies, treatments and instructionals from over 60 invited artists all over the world. Borrowing the structure of Fluxus scores, youtube tutorials and eHow articles, this curated publication asks artists to consider IfNf’s core mission: to explore "new ways of feeling, and ways of feeling new.”
Welcome to the absurd and uncanny world of the department of cautionary warning, a playful parody where Public Works meets provocateur. As the final exhibition of our Season 2 City Making series, dept.caut.warn. underscores the tedious operations and codified creativity of city government with a sincere concern for the poetics of public life.
Office Work is a social practice project by Carrie Sinclair Katz, Jon Gourley, and The Big Conversation Space (Niki Korth and Clemence de Montgolfier) that recognizes the so-called Kulturkampf ongoing in the San Francisco Bay Area and aims to use the jargon of “work spaces” to forge a common understanding.
The Society of Submerged Culture, a project by Bay Area artist Lauren Hartman, reveals the many layers of San Francisco's undersea history, ranging from sunken ships under the financial district to a coastline dotted with shipwrecks. StoreFrontLab serves as the Society headquarters offering maps, nautical instruments, an archive of artifacts, a library of submerged literature, and a variety of programs.
Big Sale is a one-day event, organized by San Francisco-based KIDmob. Big Sale welcomes streetgoers of all ages to participate in a series of purposefully vague and mysterious transactions that adapt the familiar language of commercial advertising and consumer desire. KIDmob has reimagined this framework as a cashless transaction market that builds community, tests social and interaction-based art and designs through the exchange of not-your-average, store-bought goods.
San Franciscans are angry. They are angry about the city, their city, as exemplified by the ongoing storm of headlines, sound bites, and neighborhood tensions. Google bus protests and Twitter tax breaks. Ellis Act evictions and a proposition to limit building heights. Given the seemingly disconnected conscious of our city and its citizens, and a desire to encourage learning from each other, the Urban Symposium series will foster an interactive and participatory dialogue about urban life as it relates to San Francisco's restless social and political climate.
SEASON 3: 2015–2016
Will the rains come? StoreFrontLab is pleased to partner with CCA Architecture and Urban Works Agency to present a timely discussion illuminating the relationship between water, infrastructure, and territory—and why addressing long-term water demands will take more than simply more rain.
Indigo Mind is an ambitious group exhibition celebrating the work of neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks. Opening September 26 at StoreFrontLab, the project features artists who explore a range of brain and body phenomena examined in Sacks’ research. These works present the influence Sacks has had on our understanding of the human condition in its limitless variation and form.
